Jasper Police have now formally charged a man following the weekend shooting death of 33-year-old Justin “Fidget” Scott. The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Billy Wayne Webb, of Jasper.
Webb is charged with 1st Degree Murder, and his bond was set Tuesday at $200,000.00 by Municipal Judge Robert Jackson. As of late Tuesday afternoon, Webb was still being held in the Jasper City Jail.
A book-in photo of Webb will not be available after he has been transferred to the Jasper County Jail.
Meanwhile, a second man who was at the scene has been charged with an unrelated crime. 36-year-old Julio Salvador Mendez, Jr. was charged with possession of a controlled substance. He has since been released from the Jasper County Jail on an $8,500.00 bond, which was also set by Judge Jackson.
The incident began late Sunday afternoon when, according to Police Chief Gerald Hall, Scott was shot in front of a house at the corner of Peachtree and Sheila Streets, and he was dragged one block away to the corner of Peachtree and Cavin Streets by a friend trying to get him to safety or get him some help.
He died at that location and was pronounced deceased by Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Brett Holloway, who ordered an autopsy. The results of the autopsy are not yet available.
Hall said that officers a short time later recovered a weapon on or near Peachtree Street near the scene.
He said it appeared that those involved had been attending a party or get together at the home on Peachtree when the incident occurred. However, he did not say what sparked the confrontation or shooting.
