Stolen ATV Hit by Train

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby says that an all-terrain vehicle which had been reported stolen was hit by a train late Wednesday night in the southernmost end of the county.

According to Burby, his deputies responded shortly before 11:00 to the Kansa City Southern railroad tracks just south of Deweyville near County Roads 4203 and 4212 when a train engineer reported that the train had hit an ATV that was on the tracks.

Burby said the ATV, a Black Polaris 100, had been reported stolen in Vinton, Louisiana in 2019.

Burby said it was initially unknown if anyone was on the ATV, so numerous personnel from law enforcement, the Deweyville Fire Department, and from the Kansas City Southern Railroad conducted a search along two miles of track, but found nothing.
