There’s still no answer on what may have been the cause of a fire that occurred on Saturday at the Portacool Manufacturing Plant on the north side of Center. The blaze broke out shortly before 3:00pm and completely destroyed the company’s main production building. Center Fire Chief Keith Byndom has issued a five paragraph letter which thanks seven other fire departments and other entities who assisted in battling the blaze. However, the letter never mentioned any theories as to how the fire may have started on where in the building it might have originated. The fire raged for about eight hours before firefighters finally got a handle on it very late Saturday night. Fortunately, there were no reports of any injuries. Portacool is a major employer in Shelby County, with just under 400 people on the payroll.
