TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - A Smith County juvenile supervision officer has been left with critical head injuries after he was reportedly attacked by an inmate with a shower rail.
The attack took place Saturday around 11:15 a.m., with a 911 call reporting the incident at the Smith County Juvenile Detention Center on the 2000 block of Morningside Drive.
Video footage of the assault shows the suspect, who is a minor, striking Demontray Taylor, 29, several times with a handicap shower rail that had come off a shower wall. When EMS arrived, Taylor was found lying on the floor with what appeared to be “significant head trauma.”
“This is an extremely serious incident and the officer, by God’s Grace, is fortunate to be alive‚" Smith County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said in an email release.
Taylor was taken to a hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and was treated for critical head injuries. The sheriff’s office said Taylor is now in stable condition as of Monday afternoon.
