A Newton County man is behind bars following a Wednesday night shooting in Deweyville that left two people critically injured.
William Ronald Sepulvado was arrested on two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second-degree felony, after investigators say two individuals were shot while sitting inside a pickup truck.
“Deputies made contact with the suspected shooter at his residence and detained him for questioning,” Havard said in a news release.
According to the sheriff’s office, the victims fled the scene in their vehicle, attempting to drive to a local hospital. While traveling along County Road 4181, the vehicle left the roadway.
“First responders determined both victims had sustained gunshot wounds to the head,” Havard said.
“They were life-flighted to a Houston hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition,” Havard said.
Evidence collected during the investigation was presented to Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Dana Ashmore, who issued two arrest warrants for Sepulvado.
Sepulvado was transported to the Newton County Jail following his arrest.
Bond will likely be set Thursday.
Havard also thanked assisting agencies for their response.
“We appreciate the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Deweyville Fire Department, Little Cypress Fire Department, Acadian EMS, Newton Police Department, Precinct 4 Constable Matt Wonders and the Texas Department of Public Safety for their assistance in this investigation,” Havard said.
Sepulvado appeared before Newton County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Connie Smith on Thursday morning who officially charged him with two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and set his bond at a total of $100,000.
The investigation remains ongoing and Havard said he believes additional arrests might be forthcoming.
Havard said he believes the incident was the result of an ongoing feud or dispute between the two men.
