A suspect is in custody, accused of shooting a deputy in Henderson County early Thursday.
According to Mark Sanders, a spokesman for the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was shot twice overnight in the Eustace area. The deputy was treated at a Tyler hospital as is expected to make a full recovery.
A manhunt began sometime before 3 a.m. when a deputy attempted to stop 40-year-old Jack Cody Raburn for a traffic violation. When the deputy approached, his vehicle rammed the patrol unit and took off, the sheriff’s office said.
Sanders said the suspect eventually crashed the vehicle into a ditch on U.S. Highway 175 and took off on foot.
Other law enforcement agencies, including a DPS helicopter and tracking dogs from the Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice joined the pursuit.
Henderson County deputies then followed Raburn into a wooded area.
“While chasing the suspect on foot one of them was shot twice,” the news release stated.
The unidentified deputy was shot once in the foot and once in the leg.
Dogs tracked the suspect to a home near Gun Barrel City, where deputies discovered a vehicle had been stolen.
After confirming Raburn’s identity, law enforcement arrived at his home in Gun Barrel City, where the sheriff’s office said he was waiting on the roof with a shotgun and pistol.
He is charged with Unlicensed Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle. Judge Scott Williams also issued an arrest warrant for a charge of Attempted Capital Murder.
Texas Rangers are now investigating the shooting.
Highway 175 traffic in the area of the investigation is down to one lane in either direction between FM 316 and Hwy. 334.
