CENTER, Texas — An East Texas man died Saturday after he was found unresponsive while waiting to be booked into the Shelby County Jail. A 24-year-old man was taken to the Shelby County Jail on assault charges involving a family member and placed into a holding cell. During a face-to-face observation by jail staff, he was found unresponsive and the staff began lifesaving measures, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. He was taken to the Center Emergency Department, where he was pronounced dead. A preliminary autopsy report revealed that suicide was the cause of death, the sheriff's office said. The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
