Numbers coming out of Sabine County on Tuesday night showed that an unprecedented 88.34% of their electorate cast ballots in the 2020 General Election. Daily News & More is reporting that a total of 7,112 of the county’s 8,051 registered voters went to the polls.
Of those who voted, 87.2% went red for Trump/Pence, while 12.1% went blue for Biden/Harris.
Sabine County voters also overwhelmingly supported successful re-election bids by Senator John Cornyn, Congressman Louie Gohmert, and Texas Railroad Commissioner Jim Wright.
Voters in the city of Hemphill re-elected longtime Mayor Robert Hamilton, who has served in his elected position since 1994. Hamilton garnered 251 votes while his challenger, Cliff Young, received 121 votes.
However, there will be changes on the Hemphill City Council as two incumbents were up for re-election, and both lost in very close fashion.
Place 1 Councilman Lee M. Dutton lost to challenger Glinda Clark, 197-176, and Place 5 Councilman Glen Chance lost to challenger Jaimie Westbrook, 197-175.
There was also a shakeup on the West Sabine ISD School Board with three incumbents up for re-election, and all three summarily being unelected.
For the Place 5 seat, challenger Kenneth Smith defeated incumbent Carla Randall, 553-446.
For the Place 6 Seat, challenger Lisa Lane defeated incumbent Tommy Mason, 304-295.
For the Place 7 seat, challenger Michael McClelland defeated incumbent Jesse Anderson, 419-325.
Meanwhile, there will be one change on the Pineland City Council.
Place 1 Councilwoman Patsy Kilcrease was defeated by challenger DeWayne Armstrong, 181-155, while incumbent Place 3 Councilwoman Lisa Welch held off challenger Shawn Mutters, 203-128, and incumbent Place 5 Councilman Tracy Lane held off challenger Donald Dowden, 204-124.
