Search underway for teenage boy believed drowned in the Neches River

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

A search for a teenage boy believed drowned in the Neches River began on Monday and continued on Tuesday. The incident occurred shortly after 3:00 Monday afternoon in a portion of the river about 3 miles southeast of Lamar University. Local officials said that the 14-year-old was on a boat being operated by an 18-year-old. Officials said the boat began taking on water, possibly due to a missing drain-plug, and the boy was trying to stop the water coming in when he fell off. Texas Parks & Wildlife game wardens, Jefferson County deputies, and Port Neches firefighters have all been involved in the search.
