Scammers posing as law enforcement calling people in Jasper & Newton Counties

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Local officials are once again warning residents about scammers calling people and claiming to be law enforcement. Jasper County Chief Deputy Scotty Duncan and Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby says it’s happening to residents of both counties. Here in Jasper County, Duncan said “We continue to receive calls in reference to scam callers posing as Jasper County deputies. Please do not respond to these calls, and do not send any money. We are not debt collectors. Deputies will not contact anyone to collect money.” Over in Newton County, Burby said “We have reports that someone identifying themselves as law enforcement is calling citizens and stating that they have an arrest warrant for them for failure to respond to a Court Subpoena. Please be careful not to give out any of your personal or financial information.” Both men say that if you receive one of these calls, do not give the caller any personal information and simply hang up on them.
