BOSSIER CITY, La. -- Would you be worried if you thought there was a forgotten speeding ticket or unpaid toll lurking somewhere — something that could cause trouble, cost you money, or even jeopardize your car’s registration or driving privileges?
That’s exactly what scammers are counting on with a new deceptive tactic.
Trooper Eddie Thomas with the Louisiana State Police explains: "Most criminals act on opportunity. These scammers know many people need to handle business with the DMV, so they exploit that. They send fraudulent messages designed to trick people into thinking they are official, but they’re not."
This isn’t just happening in Louisiana.
In the past month, reports of these scam texts have surged across the U.S., including states like Texas, Illinois, New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, New Jersey, Georgia, Colorado, Vermont and California.
The scam texts often warn recipients that they have outstanding traffic tickets that must be paid immediately — or else face penalties. Some even include "click here" links with web addresses designed to look official by mimicking ".gov" sites, but these links steal your personal information.
"This scam negatively affects many residents, causing unnecessary worry and risk," Thomas said.
How can you protect yourself?

Be vigilant. Don’t click on links or respond to texts unless you’re 100% sure of the source.

If a message looks suspicious, ignore it.

Never send personal information via text message. The DMV or OMV will never request personal info by text.

Stay informed and if you’re unsure about a message, contact your local OMV or law enforcement for verification.
