It’s a familiar scam, one that hit here not too long ago, and now it’s happening in the Livingston area. Polk County Today is reporting that scammers are calling people there and claiming to be sheriff’s department deputies. In fact, just like they did here, they’re identifying themselves with the names of actual deputies. The scammer tells the intended victim that they have a warrant or didn’t appear for jury duty and tries to get them to pay them a “fine” over the phone. Law enforcement says firstly, they will never call someone and tell them that they owe a fine. Secondly, if you receive one of these calls do not give the caller any information. Instead, hang up and call your local law enforcement agency and that way you’ll know that you’re talking to the actual people.
