(Hemphill, Texas) On August 13, 2025, Deputies from the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area of McHenry and Fannin in the Bronson community of Sabine County, in regard to a dog attack.
The first responding Deputy quickly located the victim who was identified as a 10-year-old child laying in the backyard of their residence, actively bleeding from both legs and other parts of the body. The Deputy administered first aid to the victim which included the application of two tourniquets. When first responders arrived from the Pineland Volunteer Fire Department they began to assist the Deputy with rendering first aid.
Deputies then had their attention drawn toward a neighbor’s yard by, the sounds of gunshots. They observed a male subject carrying a pistol while carrying an empty dog collar in the other hand who was walking toward a kennel. They began to approach the male who then removed another dog from the kennel and dragged that dog out of sight. This was followed by three additional gun shots. Then a female exited the residence where the male was. She was dragging another dog outside of the house. The male then approached this female and took the dog from her. Deputies, as they approached the male, noted the slide of his pistol was in lock back.
They engaged the male who advised he was attempting to dispatch the dogs that had attacked the child. The remaining dog was still aggressively attacking this male with Deputies standing nearby. The male then noted he was out of ammunition and requested Deputies to dispatch the animal. The animal was dispatched due to its aggressive behavior toward the male and others. Samples from the dogs involved were secured which have been sent to the lab for rabies testing.
The dogs’ owner was identified and could not show proof of vaccination for any of the animals. They were issued three citations, one for each dog involved. According to information developed from the scene the dogs had been aggressive in the past. It appears the dogs had been let outside of their residence while the child was playing in the back yard of his residence. The dogs attacked the child in what a witness described as an unprovoked attack.
The child was transported to a hospital in Lufkin and was later transferred to Texas Children’s in Houston where he remains with family while being treated. No additional information in regards to the child’s condition will be released due to privacy concerns. The Sabine County Sheriff’s Office does have an open investigation into this matter and additional charges might be filed.
