(Hemphill, Texas) During the afternoon hours of August 11, 2025, the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a missing eighty nine-year old man with the early stages of Alzheimer’s in the Woodland Estates area off Farm to Market Road 3449. Deputies responded to the area and began checking the residence and area. Deputies were able to determine that the male subject had been missing from the home since nine-o-clock in the morning. After a short while with no results, additional resources were called in to assist due to the heat conditions and the age of the missing male. As additional units from area first responders and neighborhood residents arrived the search perimeter was expanded to cover a larger area and a command post was established in the parking lot of Bobber’s, at the Six Mile Marina boat launch.
After searching for approximately three hours in 90-degree heat, the male was located by First Responders who had been called in to assist. The male was medically cleared by Sabine County Emergency Medical Services and returned to family members. He indicated to Deputies that he had just sat down under a tree in the woods to take a “short nap”.
Sheriff George Griffith expresses his thanks and appreciation to the Six Mile Fire Department as well as the Pineland, Hemphill, Pendleton Harbor Fire Departments, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens, Sabine County Emergency Medical Services, Gib Lewis and his dogs as well as a host of residents who all assisted in the search. He also noted that the Hemphill and Pineland Police Departments assisted in the handling of other calls for service while the Deputies and himself were out searching. He also wanted to thank Bobber’s Restaurant for their help in providing tea and water to those searching.
