Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox says his department is investigating after a man shot and killed his son and then put the body on a burn pile and cremated it. Maddox says the incident happened on Sunday night at a weekend lake house off of Farm to Market Road 3315, also known as Fairdale Road, in the Fairmount Community. Head Investigator J.P. McDonough says the father, 68-year-old Michael C. Howard, reported it to the sheriff’s department on Monday and he has since been arrested and charged with Murder and Tampering with Evidence. The son has been identified as 20-year-old Mark Randall Howard. McDonough said during questioning, Howard told investigators that he mistook his son to be an intruder and he shot and killed him with a 12 gauge shotgun. When asked why he burned the body, McDonough said Howard wouldn’t answer the question and then Howard, who is a Houston attorney, requested to speak to an attorney without answering any other questions. Bond on Howard has reportedly been set at $20 million and he being held in the Sabine County Jail.
