Classes were cancelled for all Rusk High School students Tuesday after a sudden fire broke out inside one of their classrooms Monday night. After inspection of the building, classes are set to resume on regular schedule Wednesday, Supt. Grey Burton stated in a post on social media.
According to Burton, at around 9:10 p.m. Monday, the Rusk Fire Department responded to the high school campus after a fire erupted inside one of the classrooms. The fire was quickly contained and nobody was reported injured.
The Rusk Fire Department tells us the it was an electrical fire, but how it exactly happened is still being investigated.
“We actually had the electricians come in yesterday morning after everything from that night and they re-checked all the breakers, re-checked all the wires, and didn’t find anything hot so it’s really kind of odd how it happened.” said Superintendent of Rusk ISD, Grey Burton.
Classes were cancelled in order to check the campus electrical system and clean up. Classes will resume on Wednesday on their regular schedule now that the building, according to a post by Burton, has been thoroughly cleaned and checked over. The air quality is good, and electrical systems are operating perfectly, his post said.
Officials say the fire appears to have started near the teacher’s desk, burning the desk and the wall, as well as the electrical wiring connected to the computer. The fire did not spread to other parts of the building, and no one was inside.
The students who normally meet in the damaged classroom will be informed of their new room assignment by administration.
“I just can’t thank our first responders, fire department got there immediately, got it put out, just did a fantastic job so we’re just proud of that and glad everybody was safe.” said Burton.
