Newton County Sheriff Billy Rowles said Monday that the investigation into the Friday shooting death of a Jamestown resident was continuing, but there was a good chance that no charges would be filed and the case would be turned over to District Attorney Tracy Ponthier for review and possible presentation to a Grand Jury.
Rowles said there were many extenuating circumstances to the incident which he said was the result of an ongoing feud or argument between two cousins that had apparently been going on for some time.
Officers were dispatched to a home on Farm to Market Road 1020 shortly before 10:00 a.m. when it was reported that a shooting had occurred there and they arrived to find 31-year-old Payton Holmes dead.
Rowles said officers immediately went to work investigating the circumstances surrounding the case and found that the shooting was apparently the result of a series of events that had occurred in recent days, prior to the incident.
Holmes was pronounced dead at the scene by Newton County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Brenda Smith.
