Power Outages Topped over 17k in Counties North of Here

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Even as linemen were working to restore power in counties north of here, more thunderstorms rumbled across the region on Saturday and created more power outages.

Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative was reporting just over 10,000 outages on Friday in Sabine, San Augustine, Shelby, and Nacogdoches Counties and also the northernmost portion of Newton County. However, after severe thunderstorms on Saturday, the number of outages had climbed to more than 17,000 as of late Sunday morning.

The power providing entity released a statement late Saturday which said that the problem was out of their control. The statement said that the company which they receive power from, American Electric Power, had experienced a major problem and it resulted in 22 of the 34 sub-stations in their system to not receive any power.

Meanwhile, the co-op says the twelve sub-stations in their system that are still operating are receiving electricity from Oncor and Entergy.
