Palestine man accused of fleeing traffic stop while intoxicated

PALESTINE, Texas (KLTV) - A police officer arrested a man on Saturday night after he fled a traffic stop, Palestine Police Department said. At around 7:43 p.m., the officer saw a 1998 Chevrolet pickup run the stop sign at the intersection of West St. and South St., so he pulled the truck over. The officer made contact with the driver, identified as Joe Louis Roberts, Jr., 60, of Palestine. As the officer attempted to speak with Roberts, he sped away, nearly striking the officer, according to police. The officer began pursuing Roberts, who almost lost control of his vehicle at one point, and eventually lost sight of him. Officers went to the 100 block of Hardin Street, where they say Roberts is known to frequent. Police say they spotted Roberts’ vehicle at a residence on Hardin Street, and a resident gave them permission to search the home. They went inside and found him hiding in a closet. They took him into custody without incident, police say. Roberts was taken to the Anderson County Jail and booked in for driving while intoxicated 3rd or more, evading arrest or detention with vehicle, and running stop sign. His bond was $20,000. He was released on Monday.
