Sgt. Richard Standifer of the Texas Department of Public Safety said late Monday that a woman from Burkeville died when the vehicle she was driving left Highway 87 and hit a tree.
Standifer said Cynthia Echols, 73, was pronounced dead at the scene by Newton County Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Mike Kerr.
According to Standifer, the crash occurred \about two miles north of Burkeville. Standifer said an investigation into the crash revealed that Echols was driving a 2018 Hyundai Electra southbound on Highway 87 at a high rate of speed when she apparently failed to negotiate a sharp curve, causing the vehicle to leave the road, go airborne and hit a tree
Standifer said Echols was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.
The volunteers of the Burkeville Fire Department and other emergency crews were dispatched to the location shortly after 3:00, when it was reported that the accident had occurred.
