One man is dead and a policeman underwent treatment for the injuries he received in an early morning officer-involved shooting that occurred on the southeast side of town. It happened at about 5:00 at a home in the 100 block of Parker Drive off of Bevil Loop Road.
A statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety late Tuesday afternoon gave more details about the incident.
It said that a state trooper from the DPS Criminal Investigations Division was with Jasper police officers when they attempted to serve a search warrant at the house.
The statement said, "...when two Jasper Police Officers made entry and were clearing the house, a suspect began firing at them and shot one of the officers in his ballistic vest. Both officers returned fire, and the shooter was shot and killed."
Jasper Police Lieutenant Garrett Foster said it was a no-knock warrant but the officers yelled and alerted the occupants of the home before entering. He also said that video from the body-cams worn by the officers has been reviewed which showed that the officers did, indeed, identify themselves as police when they entered the home.
The deceased has been identified as 67-year-old Elvin Dean Land, a man who lives at the address and was shot there last year by an unidentified gunman. Land, who is retired from the Texas Department of Transportation, was hospitalized for weeks and finally recovered.
Police are now saying that the warrant was the result of an investigation that had been going on for several weeks.
Shortly after the incident occurred, officers from the Texas Rangers Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety were on the scene investigating the incident.
Police are now saying that although three people were at the home, only one was arrested and taken into custody. However, the name of the suspect has not been released pending formal charges and arraignment.
Police have also said a large amount of illegal drugs were found inside the home. However, the quantity and the specific details about the drug have not been released.
