One injured in Newton County crash

One person underwent hospital treatment following a two-vehicle crash in Newton County late Monday morning. It happened shortly before the noon hour on Highway 63, just west of Highway 87 in Burkeville. Sergeant Shana Clark with the Texas Department of Public Safety said that Shay Roberts, 44, of Burkeville, was driving a 2006 Volkswagen passenger car westbound when she pulled off onto the shoulder of the highway. Meanwhile, Sergeant Clark said Zachariah Gavia-Peyton, 32, of Arizona, was also driving westbound in 2016 Honda passenger car. According to Clark, Roberts tried to do a U-turn and pulled out in front of Gavia-Peyton, and that resulted in the front of the Honda striking the driver side of the Volkswagen. Roberts was transported by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while Gavia Peyton was not injured.
