COUSHATTA, La. - One person is dead in Red River Parish after a sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man, state police said. It happened just shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 71 north of Coushatta. State police detectives, who are heading up the investigation, said Red River sheriff's deputies were investigating an incident involving two people, one of whom was armed. A person filed a complaint about the incident and deputies went to meet him at a church on Highway 71. That's when George Maxie, 69, of Coushatta, arrived too. State police said Maxie approached the deputies as they interviewing the other individual and that's when Maxie was shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other details were provided as to what prompted the shooting.
