One person is dead and two are injured after a violent incident in Vernon Parish. It occurred shortly before 2:00 Tuesday morning in the Rosepine area, just northeast of DeRidder. According to the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Department, a woman and her children were trying to get away from her estranged boyfriend, so they went to stay the night at a friend’s house. However, the boyfriend, Lavelle Tommy Tullis, 47, of Boyce, showed up and broke into the house through a window. Once inside, deputies say he assaulted and stabbed the woman in front of her children. As this was happening, deputies say the homeowner tried to stop him, but Tullis inflicted a life-threatening wound upon him. Deputies said the injured homeowner went into a bedroom and got a gun, and as Tullis entered the room to attack him again, the homeowner shot and killed Tullis. At last word, the homeowner was hospitalized in critical condition, while the female was treated and released from a local hospital. Their names have not yet been released.
