Firefighters worked for about 90 minutes to extinguish a fire at an oil well site in northeast Newton County on Wednesday afternoon. It began at about 1:30 on Recreational Road 255, 5 miles east of U.S. Highway 87, and was finally tapped out at about 3:00. The Burkeville, Toledo Bend, Lake Rayburn, and East End Fire Departments fought the blaze. Burkeville Fire Chief Charles Duckworth says the fire was in a fracking tank which was full of oil and water and it happened as workers were preparing to plug a well. However, Duckworth said it’s not known what caused the fire. Fortunately, there were no injuries.
