The Newton Fire Department quickly handled a small fire in Shady Acres Health & Rehabilitation on Monday night. Assistant Fire Chief Karen Smith Landrum said that the fire "...appeared to have been started by an attic fan and had possibly been burning for a while". Landrum also said "Thankfully, the alarms went off, or it could have been much worse". Captain Melanie Smith noted that the department had a very quick response to the scene.
