The Newton Fire Department had their hands full late Monday afternoon trying to contain a large grass and brush fire, which also destroyed an old wooden storage shed. Fire Captain Melanie Smith said it happened at the home of Cody & Mary Ann Hawthorne in the 6100 block of Farm to Market Road 2626. Captain Smith said the couple had a controlled burn two days prior, but apparently there were still smoldering embers in the ashes and heavy winds on Monday blew those embers out. The Texas A&M Forest Service also responded to assist.
