Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby confirmed on Thursday that he and others from his department were investigating the discovery of a human skull.
According to Burby, the skull was found alongside the Sabine River near Bon Wier. Burby did not reveal exactly where the skull was found or who found it. However, sources in the area have said it was found in a sand bar near Newton County Road 4085.
Burby said the skull had been sent to a forensic lab or pathologist in hopes of finding additional information about it. He said at this time there is no way of knowing whether it is the remains of a man or woman or how long it has been there.
Burby said "We're just not releasing additional information at this time because that's all we know and there's just nothing else to release at this point."
Burby said he would release additional information as soon as it is available.
