We've garnered new information about a prison inmate accused of killing his cellmate in the Gib Lewis prison unit in Woodville, and we've learned how prosecution is carried out with crimes that occur within prison walls. Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) spokesman Robert C. Hurst says that Jason Mark Ryder, 42, beat to death his cellmate, Danny Luken, in the early morning hours of Friday, January 6th, 2023. TDCJ records show that Luken was serving a life sentence plus 84 years for several crimes, and he had been imprisoned since 1986. Meanwhile, Ryder was serving a 70 year sentence and we've now learned more about the crimes that he was convicted of committing, including that he killed his 3-year-old sister when he was 5-years-old. The Facts, a news entity in Brazoria County, documented the incident from Ryder's childhood came out during an unrelated 2002 trial. In the mid-1980s, when he was 5 and his sister was 3, the pair were in foster care in Louisiana. The story says that the boy pushed the girl into a bayou and she drowned. The story said that due to the circumstances, investigators ruled the death as an accidental drowning. Ryder also has a conviction for murder in Walker County and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison on that charge. In 2002, Ryder was convicted on an October of 2000 charge of Injury to a Child in Brazoria County and received a 5o year sentence. In that case, Ryder lured a 9-year-old girl into a wooded area near Angleton High School and then choked her. Miraculously, she survived. Tyler County District Attorney Lucas Babin said Wednesday that the Texas Department of Criminal Justice has a Special Prosecution Unit that is headquartered in Huntsville and handles crimes which occur within prison walls. Babin explained that this arrangement assists local DA's who are already swamped by their own caseload. Babin said that Greg Whitley oversees prosecution for this area, which includes the Lewis Unit in Woodville and the Goodman Unit here in Jasper. According to Babies, the investigation of the crime is carried out by the Office of Inspector General, and then the case is sent to the Special Prosecution Unit. After that, the case will be presented to the Tyler County Grand Jury for their consideration of indictment. Babin said that he is in no way involved with the case, unless he's requested to step in and assist, which he says he would gladly do.
