GRAMBLING, La. (KNOE) - Nearly 30 athletes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference were suspended after a halftime brawl on Nov. 8.
A brawl broke out during the Grambling vs. Bethune-Cookman football game. The SWAC had suspended 18 GSU athletes and nine Bethune-Cookman athletes.
Most of those athletes are suspended for one game, but three of them are suspended for two “due to the severity of their actions,” the SWAC said.
GSU also received $40,000 fine, and Bethune-Cookman a $25,000 fine.
Grambling released a statement on Facebook, writing, in part, that the fight does not represent the university’s values.
“We hold ourselves to a higher standard -- on the field and beyond it,” Grambling wrote. “Following yesterday’s incident, Grambling State University is conducting a full review in coordination with our athletic department and conference officials. Our commitment remains unchanged: to compete with passion, lead with discipline, and represent our community with excellence.”
Grambling said they will share updates as they become available.
