NATCHITOCHES, La. -- A 15-year-old was arrested Monday night after mishandling and discharging a firearm that injured someone, according to Natchitoches police.
The teen is charged with illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile and negligent injuring.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. at a house in the 3000 block of University Parkway. Natchitoches police, Natchitoches Parish sheriff's deputies and Northwestern State University police responded and found a person suffering from a single gunshot wound.
Officers began live-saving measures until first responders arrived. The victim was taken to Natchitoches Regional Airport where he was airlifted to an Alexandria hospital. Police said the victim is stable.
Witnesses reportedly told investigators the teenager was handling a firearm in a "negligent way," causing it to fire and hit the victim.

- Treat all firearms as if they are loaded.
- Keep all firearms pointed in a safe direction.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
- Know your target and be aware of your surroundings.
- Know how to properly operate your firearm.
- Store your firearm safely to prevent any unauthorized use.
