Sabine County Sheriff George Griffith released a statement on Monday evening sayin that Todd Stevens the thirty-eight year old man who was wanted in Hemphill in connection with the murder of Cody Thompson of Burkeville had been found and captured in the Oklahoma.
No other details have been released but sources close to the investigation said Monday that Griffith and his deputies were following up on some leads in the search for Stevens.
Griffith said Stevens was arrested on warrant charging him with Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon as signed by Sabine County Justice of the Peace Henry Alvarado.
Word is that Stevens will remain in custody in Oklahoma pending extradition back to Sabine County in connection with the shooting that was said to have occurred at a residence on Bronson Cemetery Road around 8:00 on Sunday night.
Late Monday afternoon, Griffith announced that a pickup truck with a body inside was found burning in Chambers County underneath an Interstate 10 bridge. Griffith said the truck is believed to belong to the victim, and the body was sent to the Jefferson County Morgue where an autopsy showed gunshot wounds that are consistent with what witnesses described.
Sheriff Griffith said deputies spoke to two witnesses who told them Stevens, of Bronson, who was a resident of Bronson, had shot Thompson, of Burkeville, who was sitting in his pickup truck. The report said Stevens then got into the truck with Thompson still inside and he drove away from the scene.
