A capital murder suspect accused in a deadly Beaumont shooting is the focus of an active manhunt after authorities say he was mistakenly released from a Texas prison instead of being returned to Jefferson County to await trial.
KFDM News first learned of the situation from Beaumont Ward One City Councilman and attorney Cory Crenshaw.
Twenty-one-year-old Tydrick Davis is charged with capital murder and is awaiting trial alongside two other suspects in the 2024 killing of 39-year-old Ebonie Gilbert.
According to TDCJ Director of Communications Amanda Hernandez, Davis was transferred to TDCJ on November 4, 2024, to begin serving a Jefferson County sentence for theft from a person. Hernandez says Davis was sentenced to one year and nine months and was released from custody on March 30.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is now investigating how Davis was released.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office tells KFDM that Davis should have been returned to Jefferson County to await trial on the capital murder charge. The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office is aware of the situation.
Authorities are asking anyone with information on Davis' whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers at 833-TIPS.
Davis and two co-defendants are accused of fatally shooting Gilbert on September 26, 2024, outside her home on Bennett Street in north Beaumont.
Gilbert's mother discovered her body the following day.
Investigators say Ring camera video shows Gilbert interrupted suspects who were burglarizing her vehicle. Police believe she was shot and killed during the confrontation.
