LIVINGSTON, Texas (KLTV) - A man died from shooting himself after a DPS officer used a taser in an attempt to disarm him.

David Towfic Amad, 56, of Channelview, was visiting his son’s gravesite in Livingston when he called authorities just before 10 p.m. on June 23, threatening to kill himself, according to a state report.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the scene at Nettles Cemetery and attempted to persuade him to leave and get help.

After this did not work, a Department of Public Safety officer tazed Amad from behind, “hoping to disarm him,” according to the report. Instead, Amad grabbed his gun and shot himself in the head.

The responding authorities attempted to provide life-saving care before he was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
