Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft has announced that deputies have found and arrested a man accused of driving a large U-Haul truck which hit and damaged a business, and then driving away from the scene. It happened on Friday at a convenience store in the Evans Community, which is just across the Sabine River and about 9 miles east of Burkeville. He has been identified as 36-year-old Devlin Spearman, a resident of the Knight Community which is a few miles southeast of where the incident occurred. Investigators say Spearman caused about $1,500.00 worth of damage to the canopy in front of the store when he hit it. It also turns out that the U-Haul truck was stolen. Craft said the truck had been rented by someone else in the Houston area in August of last year, but it was never returned, so U-Haul reported it stolen. Spearman has been charged with Criminal Damage to Property with bond set at $10,000.00. He remains in the Vernon Parish Jail. Meanwhile, investigators are working to determine how Spearman came to be in possession of the stolen truck.
