The shooting death of a driver inside a pickup truck on Main Street in Lumberton Friday night remains under investigation with no immediate arrests made, after the passengers, including two minors, told officers they were heading to Silsbee to buy drugs when they began arguing. They say the driver pointed a gun at them and one backseat passenger shot and killed him, according to information Lumberton Police Chief Danny Sullins provided to KFDM News.
Lumberton Police responded to the scene at about 6 p.m. Friday in the middle of Main Street near Pine Burr in Lumberton, close to a credit union and nursing home. One pickup truck had struck the rear of another pickup, but the collision turned into a homicide investigation when officers discovered the driver had been shot and killed, according to Chief Sullins.
He says two minors were in the pickup along with an adult and the adult driver. According to Chief Sullins, the passengers told investigators they were heading to Silsbee to buy drugs when an argument ensued. They say at one point, the driver turned around and pointed a gun at them. One backseat passenger then shot and killed the driver. The pickup truck struck the rear of another pickup following the shooting.
Chief Sullins says District Attorney Rebecca Walton went to the scene, and he also thanks the Texas Rangers, the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance. Jefferson County S.O. sent crime scene technicians to help out.
