Man Arrested on Newton County Murder Charge Following Shooting Death of Payton Holmes

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Department has announced that a man involved in a recent deadly shooting has now been arrested on a murder charge. The incident occurred on Friday, May 1st in the Jamestown Community.

Deputies responded to a home on Farm to Market Road 1020 at about 10:00 that morning and arrived to find 31-year-old Payton Holmes dead.

Sheriff Billy Rowles later said that due to the circumstances of the shooting there was a possibility that no charges would be filed in the case and it would be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office for their review and could possibly be taken before the Grand Jury.

On Friday, Rowles announced that Justice of the Peace Mike Greer had issued a murder warrant, and the suspect who had apparently been staying in the Beaumont Area, turned himself in at the Jefferson County Jail the evening before.

The name of the suspect has not yet been released pending formal charges and arraignment, which is expected to occur over the weekend.

Shortly after the shooting occurred, Rowles said he believed it was the result of a feud or disagreement between two cousins that had apparently been going on for some time.
