SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - A Longview man accused of sexually assaulting a child is behind bars Wednesday after he fled to California.

Kayvionta Patterson, 25, is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child.

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office said the crime was first reported on Nov. 6, launching the investigation.

Deputies then learned Patterson likely had plans to flee the state and attempted to find him before he was able to. The sheriff’s office said although they were close on several attempts, Patterson was able to evade them.

Working with DPS, the investigation found Patterson was heading toward California and passed the information along. A California police department found Petterson’s vehicle and, with help from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Patterson was arrested and is held on a $750,000 bond.
