Local residents apparently still burning despite burn ban and recent fires

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Local firemen were busy again on Monday responding to the numerous reports of grass and woods fires across the region. Firemen say most of the fires on Monday were not associated with the Sherwood Creek Wildfire west of Jasper. Shortly before 4:00 pm the volunteers of the Angelina River Fire Department responded to a call on County Road 23, where it was reported that someone was burning leaves, despite the ban on burning. Deputies with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department have not released additional information but they have confirmed that a citation has been issued to someone who is accused of starting the fire. The Angelina River firefighters were also dispatched to a location west of town on Sunday evening when it was reported that another fire was burning and that it was suspected that it was intentionally set. However, there are no details or additional information concerning that call.
