The Texas Department of Public Safety announced Wednesday that the driver of a Ford pick up truck had been arrested in connection with the recent auto pedestrian accident that occurred on March 12th west of Jasper, which resulted in the death of 56 year Michael Mitchell.
DPS sergeant Shana Clark said Dan Williamson, 64, of Jasper had been charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid, Causing Death, which is a felony.
Clark said Mitchel was walking on the edge of the westbound lane when he was hit by the vehicle driven by Williamson around 10:00 pm on Highway 63, just west of the Curtis Community.
Clark said Williamson did not stop, and he returned to the scene a short time later.
Following the accident, Mitchell was taken by ambulance to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time after his arrival. Officers said a nine year old child that was riding with him was not injured in the accident.
Williamson was later taken to the Jasper County Jail, where he appeared before Jasper County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace John Cooper, who officially arraigned him on the charge and set his bond at $50,000 and he was later released after making arrangements to post bail.
