A 78-year-old Livingston man will spend the rest of his life in prison for the August 2017 murder of his wife. John Orbon Speights received a 99 year sentence on Monday from State District Judge John Wells in the Polk County Courthouse. Prosecutors said Speight’s wife, Carolyn, pushed her Life-Alert button and she told the Life-Alert operator that her husband was intoxicated and she was scared of him. When Polk County deputies arrived at the house, they found Carolyn dead on her bed with a gunshot wound and a shotgun on the bed next to her body. Prosecutors said John Speights was also in the house, drunk. He was arrested and charged with murder, and he had been in the Polk County Jail ever since under a $200,000.00 bond.
