LEESVILLE, La. (KPLC) - A Leesville man was arrested after allegedly breaking into a home and barricading himself inside with the homeowner’s firearm, Vernon Parish deputies said.
Around 4 p.m. on Monday, deputies responded to a call related to an aggravated burglary at a home on Bolgiano Loop in Leesville.
According to authorities, Matthew Sterling, 35, of Leesville, had kicked in the door of the home and stolen a weapon before running into a shed on the property. There, deputies made contact with Sterling, who had barricaded himself inside the shed and was sporadically firing his weapon and threatening deputies.
The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded to assist and secure the area, and authorities attempted to negotiate with Sterling for four hours without success.
The Bear Cat armored vehicle was deployed and removed the door of the structure. At this point, deputies said Sterling surrendered without further incident.
Sterling was transported to an area medical facility for treatment, and he was later arrested by Vernon Parish deputies.
Sterling faces one count of aggravated burglary, criminal damage to property, resisting an officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a stolen firearm.
He remains in the VPSO jail, and bond has not been set.
