Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

The San Augustine County Sheriff’s Department has announced the discovery of a large marijuana growing operation which was on National Forest Land.

Officials say officers on the local, state, and federal level raided the operation off of County Road 303 in the southern end of the county and discovered approximately 23,000 marijuana plants growing over several acres.

According to the sheriff’s department, two Hispanic males who were living at the site and taking care of the growing operation fled on foot and managed to elude capture. Officers said they had to clean up the trash at the site where the men were living.

Officials say the marijuana plants were all pulled out of the ground and then removed in bundles by a helicopter and flown to another location where they were buried.
