A large fight broke out at the end of the first quarter of the Burkeville vs Hull Daisetta basketball game Tuesday night at Hull Daisetta High School, and the rest of the game was canceled.
Players and fans rushed onto the court and video showed two adults assaulting a student.
According to Hull Daisetta ISD Superintendent Tim Bartram, it all started after a Hull Daisetta player was ejected from the game, and then a Burkeville student in the bleachers reached over the railing and hit a Hull Daisetta player on the bench. Bartram said the Burkeville student then came down to the side of the court and started assaulting a player on the Hull Daisetta bench and at that point a big brawl broke out.
Burkeville ISD Superintendent Gordon Thomas confirmed Bartram’s version of events, and both men said that it’s the responsibility of the fans and students to act appropriately.
After the cancellation of the game, the problems then spilled out onto the parking lot where a police officer had a physical confrontation with students, and there could possibly be a charge of Assault on a Peace Officer filed.
The incident is under investigation by both school districts, law enforcement, and the UIL.
