Lamar cancels classes following active shooter hoax

Officials at Lamar Institute of Technology in Beaumont cancelled classes for the rest of Thursday after law enforcement said reports of an active shooter on the campus was a hoax. It happened shortly after 10:00 when a caller reported a person with a rifle entering the Information Technology Building. Beaumont and Lamar Police said the buildings were cleared and no one with a weapon was found. Additionally, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said they received a similar call claiming that an active shooter was at the Montagne Center, but that also turned out to be a hoax. Meanwhile, students and staff were told to muster at the Beaumont Civic Center and await further instructions. Late Thursday morning, the school issued a statement saying that the campus would be closed for the remainder of the day and all classes were cancelled.
