Kirbyville man shot and killed in Lumberton, police say it was self-defense

A Kirbyville man was shot and killed in Lumberton shortly before 8:00 Wednesday night, and police there say it was a case of self-defense after he pulled a gun on another man. It happened in front of Papa John’s Pizza on Highway 96. According to Police Chief Danny Sullins, 51-year-old Waylon Mark Palmore was shot and killed by the son of the man who he pulled a gun on. Chief Sullins says the son has cooperated with the investigation and no charges have been filed. Neither the father nor the son have been identified. According to Sullins, Palmore was picking up an order and Papa John’s employees said that he was mad at them for some reason and possibly intoxicated. Sullins said as Palmore walked out of the business, he threw a pizza box toward the father as he was walking in. Sullins said at that point the father asked Palmore “What are you doing?”, and witnesses said that Palmore then pulled 9 millimeter pistol and pointed it at the father. According to Chief Sullins, as this was happening the son was getting out of their vehicle and saw what was happening. The son then pulled his own gun and fired four to six shots at Palmore, who was struck in the head and died at the scene. Meanwhile, the father was hit by one of the bullets which Sullins says is believed to have ricocheted and hit the man’s wrist. A nurse from Houston happened to be eating in the restaurant and he provided emergency care to the father until first responders and an ambulance arrived.
