Jasper Police had an interesting slow-speed pursuit on Thursday evening that ended when their suspect had no choice but to stop.
It started at about 8:00 when Lieutenant Garrett Foster said Sergeant Jimmy Neel tried to stop a vehicle for a minor traffic violation. However, Foster said the driver refused to pull over and continued traveling eastbound on Highway 190 at about 30 miles-per-hour.
Foster said he finally pulled over just east of the Goodman Prison Unit. Foster said the man then got out of his vehicle and began dancing on the highway until Neel was able to place him into custody.
Officers discovered a few minutes later that the reason the man stopped was because his vehicle ran completely out of gas and he could go no further.
The suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Joel Anthony Shelton, of Newton. He appeared before Municipal Judge Robert Jackson and was charged with Evading Arrest or Detention with a Motor Vehicle and Driving While License Invalid. His total bond and fine came out to $5,151.00.
As of late Friday afternoon he remained behind bars.
