A Jasper man died after the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban he was driving went off the road and rammed into a brick wall at the south end of Main Street. The accident occurred shortly after 5:00 on Thursday evening. Firemen, police and other emergency crews arrived at the location to find the vehicle smoking and three citizens trying to remove the driver 74 year old Glenn Payne from the vehicle. However, the door was jammed and they were not able to get him out of the vehicle until firemen arrived and assisted. Payne, who was a lifelong resident of Jasper and worked in the carpet and remodeling business, was taken by ambulance to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital, where was pronounced dead a short time later. What caused the crash is not known, but a witness said the vehicle driven by Payne was traveling south, when it slowly veered off to the left side of the road for about 75 feet, before crashing into one of the brick walls the City of Jasper recently constructed at the end of Main Street. A longtime friend said Payne had recently suffered from medical issues.
