Inez Wingfield found dead near Logansport

A woman that made the news here in Jasper in the late 90’s is dead. Authorities in Desoto Parish Louisiana have confirmed that Inez Wingfield Mancil was found dead near Logansport, Louisiana. Officers there say Mancil's body was discovered in her pickup truck on July 30th. However, her remains were not positively identified until this week by a medical examiner in Shreveport. Investigators with the Desoto Parish Sheriff’s Department say it appeared that the vehicle driven by Mancil had got stuck on a dirt road and that she died as the result of a heart failure. Mancil was the subject of many news stories here in the Jasper Area in the late 90’s when the body of a Mora, New Mexico man was found buried on her property on Bevil Loop Road. Further investigation revealed that Mancil had killed the man in Mora where she was living at the time and brought his body back to Jasper in a deep freeze. Mancil was later tried for the crime and found guilty in a court in Las Vegas, New Mexico and was sentenced to 20 years in prison but was released a few years ago. Those close to Mancil say she still had a home here in Jasper but also had a home in nearby Sabine County and maybe another one in Logansport. Mancil was 74 years old.
