Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard said shortly after 1:00 Wednesday afternoon that everything was under control and there was no danger following the discovery of a gun at the Kirbyville High School. Harvard said officers from the Jasper County Sheriff's Department along with the Kirbyville Police Department were dispatched to the school shortly after noon when a school resource officer reported that he had learned that a student was in possession of a gun. Havard said he and others investigating the incident believe the student brought the gun to school to sell it to another student and that no shots or threats were made. As the investigation continues, more information has become available and it now appears that the parents of a 14-year-old had taken a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson automatic pistol to school with the intent to trade to a 16-year-old student for a vape smoking device. Word is that upon learning of the situation the parents notified officials within the school who immediately went to work looking for the gun. Further information that following the exchange of the gun for the smoking device, the 16-year-old ran from the school, but was apprehended by the resource officer who also took possession of the gun. When the gun was reported the school was shut down and it was later decided that all classes would be dismissed at 2:00 pm. Sheriff Havard said he was very pleased with the fast response of his officers along with the Kirbyville Police Department and the school resource officer and they way they handled the whole situation. Havard and others have made it clear that they will be pursuing charges against both students. However, the names of the suspects have not been released due to their age.
